Venus was born as Ryan L. Dolor at Lugait, Misamis Oriental, Mindanao. She is the 3rd of her parents’ five children. Having her father pass away 12 years ago was a painful time for her, since she had been daddy’s little girl. Yet Venus has moved on and has continued in keeping her promise to him by supporting her younger siblings in their education.

Venus graduated with honors at Lugait Central School. An elementary located in Misamis Oriental. During her high school years, she was the President of the Student Body Council and in 1998, graduated Salutatorian from Sacred Academy, located in Iligan City. Upon entering college at Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology, evidence of her being a young achiever proved true, as she was named President of the Department of Science and Mathematics Education Student Body Council, along with being an Executive Committee member of the institutes Student Body Council. Venus graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education, majoring in Mathematics, as well as passing her License Examination for Teaching in August of 2002.

But she had a great number of personal challenges along the way. Especially in her sexuality, and being a transsexual.

“When I was in 5th Grade, I really could feel that there was something changing inside me. I felt attracted to someone of my own gender. He happened to be a classmate in the 6th Grade, and was my first crush. He was so cute. From then on I really began feeling that I am gay, because most of my friends were girls. We played with dolls and girl stuff together. But I kept all this secret from my family.”

In her home, Venus behaved like a boy. She bottled her feelings up inside, for fear of her family’s reaction. It was very hard during that time. As if living in a prison.

“There was a time my father got drunk, and called me Venus. When I didn’t go near him, he only got madder, and asked if I was a boy or a girl? But I just couldn’t answer. So he scolded me and kicked me out of the house for the night.”

Avedon FrameThat proved a very painful turning point for Venus, but she proved her worth to him by excelling as student, and graduated elementary with honors.

“In my high school years, I admitted to myself that I am either transsexual or gay. But I kept it as a secret. My classmates noticed that I was gay, although I always insisted that I wasn’t.”

Venus really kept her sexual attraction for boys, to herself, and had a number of “boy crushes” during those years. Some even asked her to have a love affair with them. She always refused, because she was afraid and preferred to remain focused on her studies.

But during those many early years, Venus found it difficult to hide her real identity. In fact, she felt jealous with the other gays/transsexuals who constantly flaunted with pride who they were. Sometimes, secretly crying because she really wanted to shout to the world who she is, all the while, asking, “When will I find my true happiness?”

In spite of all this, Venus continued her studies and proved to her family that she could fulfill her and her family’s dreams.

“I decided to reveal my true self after my college years. From then day on, I have experienced an assortment of heartache, physical abuse and other discrimination by those around me. But I stuck with the acceptance of being a Transsexual.”

Ever since Venus opened up as a Transsexual, she has truly proved to herself and others that her decision was right. Even if as a Transsexual, she has been able to help her family and the continuing education of her younger siblings as was her promise to her father, before he passed.

For 7 years, Venus had worked for one of the more prominent Law Firms in Cagayan de Oro City. And upon her arrival in Manila, she has been connected to Tulong Pinoy Movers Unlimited, Inc. – Advocates of Development Initiatives here in Manila.

Venus is very proud of being a Transsexual. And in spite of all the discrimination, has managed to keep her head high because, “I know, and God knows, I was created with a purpose. Now, I am very happy and I keep on saying that no one can put me down because I will keep on DEFYING GRAVITY!”

“My advice to all the Gays and Transsexuals, be proud and happy with yourself and who you are. Don’t be intimidated by the negative people around you. Prove to them that God created you with a purpose. We are all here to do our part. Especially in the building of a nation. We can make our country a progressive, productive and livable one. And to those parents who have a child who is either gay or transsexual, please support them. Love and accept them for who they are.”

As an ExPat living in the Philippines. I find it relatively fun and exciting to have been given the opportunity to live among such wonderful, and yet amazingly foolish people. Not on all levels mind you. But when it comes to politics, they are just plain, fuckin' stupid. So in my infinite wisdom. I have decided to do my best to educate them as best possible.
